Harmagedon is a sci-fi/horror film from 1983, directed by anime legend Rin Taro, with character design by Katsuhiro Otomo, who later went on to create his own manga/anime legend, Akira.

It's a pretty straightforward film, with a battle of good vs. all-consuming evil. The main characters are all espers, psionic warriors who must band together and save the Earth from destruction by the mad entity known as Genma.

Altogether, it's a very visual piece, with the top animators of the early 80's creating a bleak wasteland that once was our planet. As for continuity, the story holds itself together well, except for this one character who keeps popping up here and there, she seems like sort of a ghostly "Greek Chorus" of sorts, and really doesn't add anything to the plot, except for unnecessary foreshadowing.

This film is a must-see for any anime fan. You can really get a feel for how hard the artists worked on it, drawing and painting each cel by hand. Not bad, for a movie that clocks in at around 2 hours long.

As of this writing, it is unknown whether Harmagedon is still available in the US on DVD. You may be able to find it on Amazon or Ebay. I would recommend adding this one to your collection, for Historical value, if anything.
